Rest in Peace

Light a Candle

The 19th of May 2024 brought the sorrowful news that Professor Festus Acha had been called home. For those of us who had the privilege of knowing him — as a student, a colleague, or a fellow Soban — the world is a little less bright without his extraordinary mind and generous spirit. Festus was everything that Saint Joseph's College Sasse aspires to produce: a man of deep faith, razor-sharp intellect, and boundless generosity. From the moment he arrived at Sasse as a young student in 1967 to his final years as a celebrated academic statesman, he never stopped learning, never stopped giving, and never stopped being a Soban in the fullest sense. His mathematical textbooks are in classrooms across Cameroon, ensuring that his legacy will continue to educate young minds for generations to come. But those who knew Festus will remember him not only for his scholarship, but for his laughter, his warmth, and the extraordinary care he showed to every person in his orbit. On behalf of the entire SOBA BMC family, we extend our condolences to his family and pray that he rests in the eternal light he so brilliantly reflected on earth. Vale, Professor. The equations balance perfectly now.

Obituary

Professor Festus Acha was a towering figure in Cameroonian academia — a mathematician, author, and educator who shaped the minds of thousands of students over a career spanning more than four decades. A Soban of the 1973 graduating class, he went on to obtain a PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of Edinburgh and returned to Cameroon to join the faculty of the University of Yaoundé I, where he eventually rose to become Dean of the Faculty of Sciences. He authored several foundational textbooks in mathematics that remain in use in Cameroonian secondary schools to this day, and he mentored a generation of young Cameroonian mathematicians.
